Potassium sorbate is the potassium salt of sorbic acid; it is mass produced as a chemical additive in foods and drinks, in which it acts as a preservative. Potassium sorbate is especially good at preventing mould (fungal) growth.
Sorbic acid, potassium sorbate, and calcium sorbate are novel, highly efficient, safe, and nonpoisonous food preservatives. They are the substitute for the benzoic acid as a traditional preservative. In makeup and other personal and hygiene products (i.e. shampoo, conditioner, cleansers, etc.), preservatives are used to prevent and slow down bacteria growth and product breakdown. Most of the preservatives in cosmetics are artificial/chemical-based.
One of the major advantages of potassium sorbate is its wide pH range, i.e between 2 - 6.5. The typical concentration of potassium sorbate that is commonly used in the cosmetic industry is between 0.15% - 0.3% when it is used alone or 0.1% - 0.2% when it is used in combination with other preservatives.
